The family sent me several photos of their layout and Lacy’s homecoming. Lacy so reminds me of her mother, Daisy and I look forward to watching her develop and grow. She is ringing the doorbell to go outside and is fitting right in as a member of her new pack.

Our vet has looked her over and she has eye medicine we are putting in. He does not think she has injured her eye but we will take her back once healed and he will scope her eye to be sure.  He will put in a solution that numbs the eye and then add a dye to look at her cornea and other soft tissue. But her eye has to heal first. She tracks fine with her eye and you can see that it is not bad, but still a bo bo.

She did get some extra training in with the drive to the vet in her pet carrier, she did very well. And she has the sweetest temperament and did not complain at all with our vet and his assistant.

All the girls are developing well, learning to walk and this weekend they will move from the whelp box which they rapidly outgrowing to the puppy playpen.  This gives them more room to stretch their legs, have a sleep area and we introduce the potty training system at this time. At 4 weeks we introduce them to water and at the end of the week a wet mush.

They had their first living room romp where they stayed very close to Izzy with Blondie and Dolly being the most adventure seeking, daredevils walking off the blanket we laid on the floor to boldly go where this litter has not gone before. In a week, they will be all over the living room. But inch by inch they are turning from whelp (newborns) to puppies.

They are growing with Izzy being a wonderful mother. Right now they are all about the “eat, sleep, grow, repeat”. In a few more days we should see eyes opening. For now we enjoy the ease of this stage with Izzy taking such good care of the little singers.

Dolly 1 Week

The last two weeks we have been busy! Daisy’s litter had more visitors (pictures and videos coming soon) and enjoyed the first romp ever in the puppy yard and the newly planted grass. They also got to play in the tunnel, which is always fun to watch. Lacy greeted her family for the first time and it was a surprise to her “girls” who thought they were coming to help on the farm. Video coming soon of the fun surprise! The puppies also got to visit the big doodles and get some socialization with the bigger pack. A very important learning experience and moving them from a world all their own in terms of pack order to that of the bigger “pack”. This is important for a well rounded dog and the introductions to many different things keep them on their toes and their minds engaged.

We also finally have the future vineyard fields devoid of rocks and Christmas tree stumps and Jeff worked the ripper on the tractor to break up the soil and I got to drive the tractor and till our future vineyards! Was dusty, dirty, hot work and I loved every single minute of it! But as some of you know, my most favorite present from Jeff was a huge load of mushroom compost for my gardens for valentines day! He knows how much I love to grow things.

Izzy had her xray and vet prewhelp check up with our vet on Monday. She showed four puppies coming and we thought that it would be around Thursday. She came to join us Monday to prepare and get comfortable. I checked on her at lunch as Andrew, our son in law also watched her on Tuesday and we organized our week for preparing for whelp.

Tuesday night just as we were getting home she whelped! We had just got her whelp box ready and luckily we had time to call her “guardian mom” as she wanted to come and view the whelp. She graced us with four girls this litter and all are happy and healthy. We just never know, her first litter was all boys and this litter all girls. I think we have room in this litter but we are waiting to hear from one family that is on hold and ready now to get back on the list.

Wednesday we got the word that Cinnamon was in heat! We thought she had skipped a cycle, so we were planning for October. We decided that we would go with this heat cycle pairing her with Liberty’s Banner, our new up and coming stud muffin is of age and ready for his “first” stand. Cinnamon is a perfect first girl for him and they will make pretty puppies together if everything works out. We decided to take Banner in and visit Cinnie to see how this might work out. They flirted and we chatted about the possible mate and litter with Cinnie’s guardian family.

This Thursday Lacy and Oscar visited the vet for their microchip and desexing surgery. They are recovering well and today I think will be the day that they will want to run and play and voice their opinions of crate training and small run area even more, a mark they are on their way. Sophie we are waiting a bit longer since she will be with us until here family gets back from a wedding. They all had their first shots and I will register their microchips and prepare their records. Thursday night was a bit rough with my little flock of seagulls being uncomfortable and missing sleeping next to their littermates.

Jeff took Friday off for watching the recovery. Friday night usually is still slow going recovery wise, and we both are delighted that  both are well on their way to full recovery. Sunday we should really see them get the spring back into their step.

After checking in with Jeff on the puppies and giving them some TLC  I found that Jeff had moved Izzy and her whelp into the spare bedroom from the living room which Izzy prefers. Her puppies are getting plumper and she is such a good mother! Very attentive and loving.

Then to finish our Friday night Cinnie and Banner visited again! And yes, it was go time! Banner did a Banner job on his first stand with Cinnie! So, looks like Mothers Day will be his second attempt.

Which brings us to today while still leaving much out of the events of the last weeks. Today we plant 4 vines that will be the start of Liberty Vineyards. We are planting a vine for each of our doodles and puppies we produce and  each vine will carry the name of the doodle. More vines will go in next spring as the ground has to be properly dug and then the soil rest. We are ordering our vines and look forward to having a doodle romp and crush with our puppy owners! Today we are also seeding the orchard with a cover of orchard grass. The grass holds the soil and we will mix in some clover to also feed the soil. Once the grass has a good start we will expand the dog run to the Orchard as our doodles get more room to run and romp with shade from the fruit trees we planted and part of the bigger plan of allowing them so much room to romp the hill!

I will add photos and videos tonight to get everything caught up on the web. I have taken tons of videos and pictures, but taking the time to watermark and upload has not been as important as mindful doodling.

Daisy is scheduled for a grooming as she starts to return to being her wonderful pet doodle self. She does love to check in on Izzy and her puppies (Izzy allows this).  Daisy is now officially done and in a few months will go in for her surgery and enjoy her new role as puppy lover Auntie Daisy.

Happy Mothers Day to Mothers Everywhere!

This week, we had visitors! Many in fact. All great for pup development as well as their first outdoor experience. Grass, what is grass? They went from mush to meat and this coming week the puppy canines will be introduced to soft kibble, yet another part of their phasing into full blown puppy status.

By the middle of this week, I expect that we will see Daisy stay out more and the puppies get more focused on each other as they grow less dependent on her and her care. It’s a brave new world! Puppies will play hard and learn from each other the pressure of bites, rolling over and handling. This week, we should see a very loose pack order start to emerge which will completely develop at around the end of four months.

Ideally, next week we move more into meeting humans as it is pivotal to the puppies development and becoming very human focused. The puppies will get harder to take photos of as they are on the move. Their eyes and ears will become sharp, the muzzles will elongate and we will see more “facial” expressions. Life is full, and there is no fear as they prance into their explore mode with reckless abandon. During this time, puppies require all the attention they can get and reactions to handling help us gauge development and what they each need. They are as individual as people, each special in their own way.

So here we are. We do all kinds of slight stressors and challenges beginning this week. Lots of new exposures, experiences, and some wonderful things we have developed over time with after stressing, balance. Enjoy the 5th week my puppy owners, this is the next step in your puppy growth.

Our kindred spirit litter celebrate their  one month birthday with puppy mush!

Daisy’s puppies are growing so rapidly that their food intake is coming close to being beyond Daisy milk production. She will become more reluctant to nurse and shorten time at the milk bar as the puppies will begin a gentle weaning. She is starting to nurse standing up, which means that she will also gradually cut the sessions shorter.

The pups have teeth coming in which also shorten time at the milk bar. This is all the natural way of things as the pups move from whelp to full grown doodles one day at a time. Still, after all the years it amazes me how in 8 short weeks the puppies develop into ready to leave the nest doodles and bound off to their forever homes!

During this time we will see the puppies opening up to the larger world, ready to explore and start to run. They are playing with toys and interacting not only with each other but with family members as well. And they are finding their voice, or rather, their bark.

They are getting stimulation following our system we have developed over the many years to produce wonderful doodles. We are blessed to have produced many puppies in the working therapy lines thanks to our lines and this process I think. They are getting lots of handling of the ears, face, paws in prepping for a future grooming. Their nails were done last night with face trimming coming tonight. The grooming follows with some special handling and loving.

This next week as the wean continues (and the living room and kitchen are thoroughly explored) we will watch the puppies become less focused on mom and more focused on each other, playing their own invented games and embedded in the play with be a natural interaction which will gradually establish the pack order of the litter. At the end of this week we will introduce other doodles for the first time to help the healthy adjustment of the pups with other dogs. We also will introduce cats to the mix although not both at once. I am getting ahead of myself but like to share what is happening now and what is coming. It is really fun the next few weeks to watch the coats change and the personalities come through. Daisy is introducing play to them now and watches as they try out their bark that they are not talking back. Mom’s of all species take issue with talking back I think?

The puppies future family members hopefully are watching on their puppy cam. We installed a new camera that has both android and iphone apps for our live stream. Yes, we can now say, “Liberty Labradoodles has an app for that”.  Hoping it works  for our families but we have our old camera as a backup.  We use a monitoring system on our phones so this was a  wonderful addition to offer our families.

Jeff and I worked on the puppy play yard with a mad dash by Jeff to get the new lawn planted before rains come this week.I really hope we can have the new lawn just in time for the puppies to visit with their family members. They will have  their other area outside, but we as always are working on redoing and updating our new to us old farm which we call Doodle Acres.

The pups future homes are busy pondering names (except one family that will come and visit at 6 weeks with their girls who have no idea they are finally getting a puppy until they visit). Evlon, the only boy of the group has been renamed Oscar.

Happy one month old birthday baby doodles! The next several weeks will have many steps towards socialization, exploration, and preparing to leave the nest. But for now, lets eat some meat mush!

Here are the 2 week old photos of the puppies. With the eyes opening their world is beginning to get a bit larger. They are trying to stand and wobble, soon their ears will open. This is the beginning of the transition phase, where they go from whelp (newborn) to puppy in the next several weeks beginning with the eye opening. The fun is about to begin!
